Lexie Bader’s story is one of remarkable transformation and resilience. Born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, she spends her weekends snowboarding, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, electric longboarding, and camping. This adventurous spirit has always defined her life, even through the most challenging times.
A snowboarding accident in 2015 marked the beginning of Lexie’s journey with limb loss. The accident resulted in a shattered foot and subsequent bunion surgery, which unfortunately did not heal properly. Lexie underwent 28 to 30 surgeries, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a rare nerve disease with no cure. In 2018, Lexie made the difficult decision to amputate her left leg below the knee. The surgery was a success, stopping the spread of the infection and alleviating the excruciating pain. However, during the COVID pandemic, Lexie underwent another bunion surgery on her right foot, which caused her CRPS to spread to her other leg. The pain became unbearable, leading her to elect for another amputation in 2021.
Despite the trauma and the numerous surgeries, Lexie maintained an upbeat attitude, finding solace in the fact that the amputations relieved her of the relentless pain. Her positive outlook and extroverted nature helped her adapt to her new life.
Lexie began runway modeling at the age of 15. She started attending a small modeling school in Boulder that was run by a family friend who was also a Vogue cover model. Her modeling career took her to New York Fashion Week and various international gigs. Despite numerous surgeries interrupting her modeling opportunities, Lexie found renewed success after her amputations. High fashion designers preferred her to model in her running blades rather than heels, finding the look more ‘futuristic and striking’.
Lexie’s ambitions were not confined to the runway. Going through a career shift, she is now on the path to become the first ever female double amputee to drive semi-trucks in the U.S. Lexie had a long-standing love for driving, finding that driving did not cause her the same physical pain as other jobs. With the support of her boyfriend, Lexie pursued a grant through the workforce disability program to cover the cost of truck driving school.
Lexie’s determination to succeed in this new field is evident despite challenges. Due to her status as a double amputee, she has encountered delays and repeated testing requirements that others do not face. Nevertheless, she remains undeterred, continuing her training and advocating for fair treatment. She plans to work with local construction companies, hauling oil tankers or dump trucks, leveraging her newfound skills to secure a stable and well-paying job.
Throughout her journey, Lexie has embraced the adjustability of her prosthetic devices. About a year and a half ago, she was introduced to the RevoFit system, which allows her to adjust the fit of her prosthetics easily. This innovation has significantly improved her daily life, making activities like driving more comfortable. The ability to make quick adjustments without removing her prosthetics has been a game-changer, especially given her active lifestyle.
Lexie’s advice to new amputees is rooted in her own experiences. She highly recommends RevoFit for those who lead active lives, as it offers convenience and comfort. We asked Lexie to describe RevoFit adjustability in one word and she said, “accessibility.” Lexie believes that the ability to fine-tune the fit of their prosthetics can make a significant difference.
From conquering the runway to navigating the open roads, Lexie embodies strength and determination, proving that no obstacle is insurmountable. Follow Lexie’s journey on Instagram, @lexie.bader
