HandHero, a team born out of a Stanford course called Design for Extreme Affordability, is transforming the medical care opportunities for individuals of all ages in Nepal. After forming a partnership with ReSurge International, a non-profit organization that provides reconstructive surgeries all over the world, they traveled to Nepal to begin their collaborative design process, and it was there that they discovered just how widespread the problems were.
Over 50% of Nepal’s population uses open fire for functions of daily living, which poses serious potential harm due to burning. Flame related accidents are quite common, and without proper medical attention AND follow up care, life long disabilities such as contracting skin can occur (potentially leading to full loss of that part of the body). This is where HandHero comes into the picture. They have identified this as a serious problem, and their revolutionary orthotic device is changing the lives of many.
What makes this orthotic device unique? With the integration of Click Medical’s CastFit solution, this splint functions by a static progressive mechanism by which the patient can make micro-adjustments to open his or her hand from the contracted state at their own pace. So care is literally placed into the hands of the patient, empowering them to receive high quality treatment where physical therapists and physicians do not exist.
We over here at Click Medical are inspired by their work, and are excited for what is to come. If you are interested in learning more about Click Medical’s CastFit solution, click here.
