Featured in O&P Edge: Adjustable-Volume Sockets Improve Comfort, Mobility, Quality of Life
The clinical case for adjustable-volume sockets just got a lot stronger.
The O&P EDGE shared new research from the Hanger Institute for Clinical Research and Education, the largest real-world outcomes dataset on adjustable-volume sockets (AVS) published to date.
This wasn’t a small pilot. Researchers followed 444 adults with lower-limb amputations across multiple U.S. prosthetic clinics, tracking outcomes as they transitioned from fixed-geometry to adjustable-volume sockets between 2023 and 2025.
Real patients, real clinics, real results.
The findings are hard to ignore:
- Socket comfort improved approximately 28.1% on a 10-point scale
- Quality of life, general satisfaction, and walking satisfaction all improved significantly
- Prosthetic mobility scores (PLUS-M) increased across both above-knee and below-knee populations
- Greater comfort gains were linked to longer daily wear time and better outcomes across the board
The conclusion of the study was, “The findings of this study suggest that the use of AVS is associated with improvements in socket comfort, general satisfaction, quality of life, prosthetic mobility, and satisfaction with walking ability. These results support the clinical utility of AVS as a viable alternative to fixed-geometry designs and highlight the potential for enhanced user comfort and function through individualized fit adjustment.”
