Kemit-Amon Lewis’s contagious laugh and smile, along with his passion for life, continue to drive him forward. Born and raised in St. Croix, he grew up with a love for the ocean and tennis. Kemit excelled in tennis, playing throughout high school, college, and even representing the US Virgin Islands in the Davis Cup. However, Kemit’s life took a drastic turn in the summer of 2019 when he contracted a bacterial infection, possibly from the ocean. The infection led to sepsis, and the treatment he received resulted in the loss of his limbs.

After spending two weeks in a coma, Kemit woke up to the encouraging words of his doctor, assuring him that he would be able to play tennis, dive, and dance again. However, the journey to adapt to limb loss was a personal one, requiring customization and finding the right tools to regain his desired quality of life.
Kemit faced challenges with insurance companies, who often deemed certain components as “not a medical necessity”. However, with the support of professionals like Brett Rosen, CPO at Hanger Clinic in Hollywood, Florida, Kemit found solutions that worked for him. He went from a rigid socket to an adjustable RevoFit® system, eliminating the need for multiple sock ply changes throughout the day. The latest socket he received features Click’s new technology, the Click® Reel. Kemit says, “With the new Click dial on my lower limb prosthesis, it makes it easier to open and close.”

Kemit also utilizes the RevoFit® system in his tennis-specific arm, ensuring a secure and tight fit that holds the racket in place. With the advancements in prosthetic technology and the expertise of professionals like Rosen, Kemit reminds us, “There’s really no limit to what the human body can do when the mind is in the right frame. Just continue to live your life, a good quality of life. The advancements in technology today allow for us to do anything that we want to do or didn’t do in the past. We also have the right people in these spaces – whether it’s the prosthetists, or engineers – there are people out there who are happy and excited to see you get back. Set those goals and get after them because there’s nothing that can hold you back besides yourself and insurance companies….but you can figure that out.”
Kemit spends his time as the Development Director at the Perry Institute of Marine Science, choreographing dance moves, capturing moments behind the camera, and playing pickleball. He also works closely with Wilson Tennis as an Advisory Staff Member, collaborating with the engineering team.
Kemit’s story serves as an inspiration to others, reminding them to embrace the opportunities and advancements available to pursue their passions and live a fulfilling life. Follow Kemit’s unwavering passion and determination on Instagram at @kemit_amon
