Meet Chris Rains, a South Carolina native who defied the odds and transformed his life after a life-altering accident. Despite considering himself a non-athletic “big kid” while growing up, Chris discovered the therapeutic benefits of physical activity following his disability.
In April 2015, Chris experienced a traumatic incident when his truck collided with an 18-wheeler on I-85. Rescuers, including paramedics and firefighters, saved his life by using a Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) to control the severe bleeding from his right leg. After his first surgery was done by general trauma surgeons, specialized surgeons later came in and determined that due to additional trauma, a below-the-knee amputation would not heal correctly. With guidance from prosthetist Jeff Sprinkle, they opted for a knee disarticulation amputation to enhance Chris’s weight-bearing capabilities.
Working closely with Emily and Jon from Hanger Clinic, Chris underwent multiple socket fittings and leg builds. However, the rigid suction-based sockets he initially used caused discomfort and limited mobility due to pressure points and his changing anatomy. Emily and Jon explored alternative solutions and introduced Chris to the adjustable RevoFit® system. This innovation, combined with a socket slit for expansion, enabled Chris to comfortably fit into and remove his socket, making a significant difference in his daily life.
He has been using the adjustable RevoFit system since 2018 and praises its effectiveness, vowing never to return to a rigid socket.
Today, Chris’s determination and perseverance are evident as he confidently navigates the gym, even lifting heavy dumbbells. His disability has given him a newfound sense of purpose and confidence, allowing him to connect with others and share his story. Chris is an advocate for local organizations, including Bethany Hamilton’s Foundation-The Forge Retreat, and actively participates in adaptive sports programs. As a certified amputee peer visitor at a local Physical Therapy Hospital, he offers support and encouragement to fellow amputees.
Remarkably, Chris now works for North American Rescue, the distributor of the tourniquet that saved his life. Saying yes to opportunities, Chris embraces life fully and spreads positivity wherever he goes. You can catch him at various events this summer, including the 2023 Hanger EmpowerFest in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Amputee Coalition Conference in Orlando, FL.
