Life is full of unexpected twists and turns that challenge our strength and resilience. Rob Crotty, a scrawny Irish boy who discovered powerlifting in his 20s, faced numerous hurdles, including a debilitating arthritic condition. Yet, with determination, Rob transformed his hardships into an inspirational journey.

Rob was living with a painful condition called hallux rigidus, which subjected him to numerous surgeries, infections, and untold difficulties. In June 2017, Rob made a brave decision to self-elect the amputation of his right leg below the knee. With powerlifting still his passion, Rob persevered through his recovery, proving to himself and others that he could still lift heavy weights, even on one leg.

A turning point in Rob’s limb loss journey came when he started working with Bryan Sculthorpe, CPO MSOP at Hanger Clinic. Bryan introduced Rob to RevoFit® adjustability which gave Rob a newfound freedom in making quick adjustments during different activities. With the turn of a dial, Rob can simply let some pressure and tension off of his residual limb allowing him to lift in the gym, cruise on his motorcycle and rock climb with ease.

As a Hanger peer support specialist, Rob extends his hand to fellow amputees, offering guidance and words of encouragement. “No one is a better advocate for you, than you.” Says Rob. His infectious optimism empowers others to overcome their own obstacles, reminding them that their potential goes beyond their physical limitations. 

Rob’s journey is fueled by a dream to compete in the 2028 Paralympic games in Los Angeles, providing him with a chance to showcase his strengths on the global stage. With a love for powerlifting, an adventurous spirit, and a passion for living life to the fullest, he exemplifies the power of determination in conquering adversity. Rob reminds us all to embrace life’s challenges with a smile, find strength within ourselves, and to empower others along the way.
